Are Teen Girls All Mean Girls?

Feature Editors:
Jayde Smith, 15

Massachusetts

Ever since the popular 2004 movie of the same name, many people use the term “mean girls” to describe the behavior of teen girls generally, but is that a fair label? Sure, we know that girls aren’t all sugar and spice—psychologists say that girls and boys are now aggressive in almost equal numbers—but we are surethat all teen girls are not doing nasty things to each other.

Read what these teens describe from their own lives as they navigate through the hallways of junior high and high school. Teen Voices encourages girls to take a stand against the “mean girl” mentality and learn to support other females in their lives. Keep reading to find out how you can save sisterhood and your friendships!!!

What it Means to be Mean

Teen Voices defines for you what a mean girl is. Warning: mean girls can have long-term effects on other girls’ self-esteem and social lives. And Kate Fitzgerald’s poem fights against the strong currents of the mean girl mentality

Tales of the Mean Girls

Unfortunately, girls can sometimes do some really lousy things to each other. These three teens describe their own battles in the mean girl “war zone.”

Sister IS Powerful!

It is possible to look beyond the mean walls and see girls for what they really are. Instead of tearing each other down, build sisterhood up! Tanasia Barbosa-White and Gabby Wilson-Sealy tell you how.

Quiz: Are YOU a Mean Girl?

The scary thing is, sometimes girls don’t even notice they’re being mean because it happens so often. Take this quiz to see if some of the actions you consider normal are actually hurtful to other girls.

What do you do when you run up against the mean girl mentality?

How do you promote sisterhood in your group of friends?
