Is Someone You Know Suicidal?

This quiz can help you determine if anyone you know is having suicidal thoughts. It is important to recognize these signs because suicide attempts are a cry for help. Your friend's actions might indicate a deeper issue. Take this quiz to help you figure it out.

1. Is your friend talking about suicide?

YES/NO
2. Has she/he made statements about being helpless or worthless?

YES/NO
3. Is she/he preoccupied with death?

YES/NO
4. Has she/he made a change in her/his eating and sleeping habits?

YES/NO
5. Has she/he withdrawn from friends, family, and regular activities?

YES/NO
6. Has she/he been involved in violent or rebellious behavior?

YES/NO
7. Has she/he started to use drugs or alcohol?

YES/NO
8. Have you noticed an unusual neglect in her/his personal appearance?

YES/NO
9. Have you noticed a personality change?

YES/NO
10. Has she/he experienced persistent* boredom or difficulty concentrating?

YES/NO
*Persistent: existing in the same state for a long time; enduring.


Not everyone expresses the same signs of depression to the same degree. If you answered yes to any of these questions, your friend may be having suicidal thoughts.

If you answered yes to three or more of these questions GET INVOLVED, but don't try to solve the problem by yourself! Make sure to tell a parent, school counselor, or a trusted adult. Most of all, LISTEN to what your friend is saying! Ask them questions to find out more of what they're thinking and don't put them down. Remind them that there are alternatives to suicide. If you aren't able to find a trusted adult, then try calling a suicide prevention hotline number. (See our For More Information section in the sidebar.)
